You Inherited the Building. We'll Deal With What's Already Inside It.
You just took over a building, and the security came with it — an analog camera system nobody documented, an alarm still tied to a company that stopped answering, an intercom that has been dead for two years, doors that half the fobs no longer open.
You do not need a salesperson telling you to tear it all out. You need someone to assess what is actually there, keep what still works, fix what is failing, and take it over so it is one company's job again. That is our signature work.
We are City Electric & Communications, family-owned in Queens since 1996. We take over cameras, alarms, access control, intercoms, and cabling that other companies installed and walked away from — across Queens, the Bronx, Westchester, and Rockland.
How a Takeover Actually Works
We do not show up with a quote sheet. We show up with questions. Here is the sequence every takeover follows.
Step 1 — Site Assessment
One of our experienced techs walks the building. We document every piece of existing equipment — cameras, panels, door hardware, cabling, intercom stations — and note what is powered, what has been decommissioned, and what is unknown.
Step 2 — System Documentation
We build a record of what is installed: make, model, condition, and wiring topology. Most inherited systems have no documentation at all. This step alone closes the gap that caused the previous company to walk away.
Step 3 — Keep vs. Replace Decision
We give you an honest breakdown — what can stay, what needs a repair, and what has genuinely reached end of life. We price the work accordingly and do not quote a replacement for anything that still functions.
Step 4 — Transition to City Electric
We handle the switch. If there is a monitoring contract with another company, we walk you through how to cancel or transfer it. We take over the panels, credentials, and remote access under our account and give you a single point of contact for the whole system.
Step 5 — Ongoing Maintenance
Once we own the system, we stay on it. We are available for service calls, equipment swaps, and annual inspections — and you can reach the same people who did the original walkthrough.
Why Inherited Systems Are Almost Always a Mess
It is rarely one big failure. It is years of small ones. The original installer moved on, so nobody has the panel codes, the camera logins, or a wiring diagram. Equipment aged past its support window while it kept sort-of-working, so no one replaced it. Tenants and staff turned over, and access lists were never cleaned up. Somewhere along the way a phone line was cut or the internet changed and the alarm quietly stopped reporting — and nobody knew until they needed footage that was never being recorded.
New management inherits all of that at once, usually with no paperwork. The instinct large providers push is to rip everything out and sell you a fresh contract. That is the expensive answer and often the wrong one, because a lot of what is in the building is fine — it just needs to be understood, documented, and brought back under control.
We Tell You What to Keep. That Is Not What Most Companies Do.
When we walk your building, we are not looking for replacement revenue — we are looking for what will actually solve the problem. If the camera DVR still records reliably and the cabling is Cat5e or better, it stays. If the alarm panel is functional and the sensors test clean, we reprogram it and move on.
This is how we have kept commercial clients across Queens and the Bronx for years: honest assessments, reasonable quotes, and no pressure to replace what is already working. When we do recommend replacement, you will understand exactly why.

Rapid Response and Service Areas
In urgent situations like a malfunctioning alarm or a recently acquired building, we can typically assess the situation within days. Our team prioritizes stabilizing critical systems quickly, even if the complete solution takes a bit longer to implement.
We proudly serve Queens, the Bronx, Westchester, and Rockland County. Being based in Queens allows George to be just minutes away from most of our commercial projects, ensuring prompt service when you need it most.

Keep What Works
The Honest Part
This is the heart of it. If your cameras still produce usable footage, we keep them and add an NVR or upgrade the weak points instead of replacing the lot.
If your alarm panel is serviceable, we reprogram it, add cellular backup, and move monitoring to our central station rather than swapping hardware. If the access control readers and wiring are sound, we adopt the system and clean up the credential list. We only replace what genuinely has to go — and we tell you why, with the failing part in front of you.
We are candid about limits, too. Some gear is too old to support or too far gone to trust — a panel that can't do cellular reporting, cameras that can't give you an identifiable face, cabling that won't carry a modern signal.
When that is the case we will show you the problem and quote a practical replacement, not nurse dead hardware to pad an invoice. Honest is the whole pitch here.
Documentation, Standardization, and Ongoing Maintenance
A takeover is not done when it works today. We document the system — device inventory, logins, wiring, and monitoring details — so the next problem takes an hour to diagnose, not a day.
Where a building has a patchwork of mismatched gear from different installers, we standardize what we can over time so it is maintainable instead of a museum of dead brands.
Then we maintain it. We offer ongoing service and maintenance contracts — scheduled checks that the alarm still reports, the cameras still record for the retention you're paying for, backups are healthy, and access lists are current — plus priority response when something breaks.
For property managers and facility operators juggling multiple buildings, this is the difference between finding out a system failed during an incident and finding out during a routine check. Healthcare operators inheriting neglected systems are a specialty — see

Common Questions About System Takeovers
These are the questions we hear most from new building owners and property managers before the first walkthrough.
Can you take over a system another company installed or abandoned?
Yes — that is the core of this service. We take over cameras, alarms, access control, and intercoms installed by other companies, including ones where the original installer is gone and left no documentation. We recover or reset the logins and codes, move monitoring to our central station where needed, and make the system yours again. Call 718-577-8339 with whatever details you have and we will start from there.
Do I have to replace everything, or can you keep what works?
You almost never have to replace everything. Our whole approach is to keep what still performs — cameras with usable footage, serviceable panels, sound readers and wiring — and replace only what has genuinely failed or can't be supported. We show you the failing part and explain why before recommending a replacement. That is usually far cheaper than the rip-and-replace a large provider would push.
What does a system assessment involve?
We walk the building, inventory and test every device we can reach, trace the cabling and network, and check the things that fail silently — whether the alarm is really reporting, whether the cameras are really recording and for how long, and who has access they shouldn't. You get a plain-English report of what you have, what's fine, what's failing, and what we'd keep, fix, or replace, with rough costs. Then you decide the pace.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance or service contracts?
Yes. We offer maintenance contracts with scheduled checks — confirming the alarm reports, cameras record for the retention you're paying for, backups are healthy, and access lists are current — plus priority response when something breaks. It is popular with property managers and facility operators who run multiple buildings and can't afford to find out about a failure during an incident. We'll size a plan to how many sites and systems you have.
How fast can you take over a failing system?
For urgent situations — a dead alarm, a building that just changed hands, a system that failed at the worst time — we can usually get out to assess within days and stabilize the critical pieces quickly, even if the full plan takes longer to complete. Because we're based in Queens, we reach most commercial sites fast. Call 718-577-8339 and tell us how urgent it is.
Tell Us What You Inherited. We'll Walk It Before We Quote Anything.
Tell us what you walked into. We will assess it, tell you honestly what to keep and what to replace, take it over, and maintain it — one company, owner-inspected.
